Oliver Stone directs the summer's starriest & sexiest ensemble in "Savages," about pot-dealing Laguna Beach brothers (Taylor Kitsch & Aaron Johnson) who inadvertently become the arch rivals of a notoriously ruthless Mexican cartel run by Salma Hayek. When the cocaine queen dispatches Benicio Del Toro to kidnap the brothers' live-in mutual girlfriend (uh-huh) Blake Lively and hold her hostage south of the border, it is ON! Those Mexicans better watch their backs, essé, cuz Tim Riggins/John Carter is one buff-ass muthafucka, and he's packin' serious heat as the muscle/guns behind the brothers' otherwise "chill" operation.

John Travolta & recent Oscar nominee Demian Bechir ("A Better Life") play two of Salma's unscrupulous cartel cronies, and though I didn't catch either of them in this first (steamy, smoky, sexy!) trailer, Uma Thurman and Emile Hirsch round out the cast in smaller supporting roles. I mean, DAMN! Oliver Stone has got his groove back apparently, evidenced not only by the "Savages" dream cast and inarguably badass plot (derived from Don Winslow's novel), but more commercially speaking by Universal's decision to bump the movie up from fall smack dab into the dog days of summer.

Sure to become cinema's most iconic rapey smoke kiss.

The studio clearly believes its got a sizzling summer sleeper on its hands, boldly swiping "Savages" from its long-inked original September release date & plunking it like an ice cube into the summer movie shark tank on July 6, the very same weekend as Sony's "Spider-Man" juggernaut launches its latest reboot. Universal is positioning the R-rated thriller as sun-soaked, sexed-up counter-programming against summer's usual superhero/sequel suspects; judging from the impression left by this first trailer (which premiered online exclusively at MTV.com, natch), they know what they're doing.
I can't wait to see this shit; there's no plainer way to say it. "Savages" opens with the big boys July 6.
